Position Summary

Working independently with support and direction from the animal technicians and animal technician lead, the animal attendant ensures basic daily requirements of all animals are maintained. The animal attendant also performs a variety of assigned duties, both inside and outside of the animal care facilities. The animal attendant is required to work with all types of species, which are subject to change based on research requirements.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with the following competencies and experience:

•Performs a range of husbandry duties including, but not limited to, feeding animals and cleaning pens/cages at VIDO facilities, including the research farm.

•Completes general maintenance duties which may include filling p-traps, cleaning of washrooms in containment, lawn care and maintenance in compound, cleaning, loading and unloading of autoclave, equipment maintenance, preparing supplies, and maintaining relevant paperwork.

•Ensures humane treatment of all animals in their care, while observing animal behavior, reporting concerns to veterinarian staff.

•Prepares, cleans and disinfects room and supplies following completion of procedures.

•Performs work independently utilizing instruction lists.

•Assists in restraining and challenging animals as required.

•Participates in providing animal enrichment and on the enrichment committee.

•Ensures confidentiality is maintained.

•Participates in assigned weekend rotation, performing a variety of tasks.

•Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum requirement completion of grade 12. Experience working with animals and understanding requirements of care is required. Relevant post-secondary education is an asset.

This position includes working full time as a bovine reproductive veterinarian and working closely with our IVF laboratory and semen production teams.
